VCASSE is being designed to explore how artificial intelligence can be developed and used in ways that are safer for people, more ethically grounded, and more conscious of long-term social and environmental impact.

Examining the risks, safeguards, and responsible design principles needed to ensure AI systems are developed and deployed in ways that protect people and society.
Sustainability
Exploring the environmental and resource impacts of AI, including energy use, infrastructure demands, and the importance of building more sustainable digital systems.
Ethics
Creating space for deeper discussion around fairness, accountability, transparency, public trust, and how AI can align more closely with human values.
Why it matters
Artificial intelligence is moving quickly, but public understanding, accountability, and long-term thinking do not always move at the same pace. Questions around safety, governance, ethics, and environmental impact are becoming more important as AI systems become more embedded in daily life.
The Vancouver Centre for AI Safety, Sustainability and Ethics is being developed in response to that gap. It is intended to help bring more clarity, more responsibility, and more interdisciplinary thinking into conversations about AI.
As this initiative develops, it may include educational resources, public engagement, applied projects, partnerships, and other forms of work that help advance a more thoughtful and responsible AI future.
